TRANSFORMING INTERIORS WITH WALL ART

Wall Art Sizes

Simple tricks to get right sized wall art for your project and budget.

There are some common sizes and variants that many interior designers use.

Designer preferred Sizes
Thanks to working with interior designers we have have streamlined the long lists of sizes. The most common sizes we propose in canvas is in the table below. The dimensions for portrait(vertical) are the same as landscape(horizontal) application as the canvas is just rotated on its side. For framed prints the approximate sizes are the same with an addition of a floating frame around the canvas. The 24″ x 36″ format is very popular in horizontal and vertical formats and translates directly to the larger size 32″ x 48″ and 40″ x 60″ because of the width to height ratio of 2:3 (vertical) or 3:2 (horizontal). This is helpful because it easily allows designers to match the canvas to the size of the space, keeping the same artwork visual.

Oversize and Extra Large Canvases

Added costs but sometimes needed for special projects.
We can custom order sizes up to 40″ x 60″ although they are much more expensive due to production size and also transport difficulties and costs. Often they are used in larger rooms that rather than make a bold statement are used to balance and ground the design.

Change the feel of a room quickly and with a canvas and accessory change.

Tips and Tricks
Once you have the ideal position and size of your artwork, the feel and style of the space can be easily changed by just changing the artwork for one the same sized, and coordinating some accessories, without starting from scratch. As you can see the room stays the same but changing the art and accessories changes the effect.

What size Wall Art do I need?

For homeowners this can open a lot of questions and is of course depending on personal preferences and objectives for the space. Generally larger canvases can be imposing a statement or but in some cases are scaled to suit the size of the room to integrate in the design . A smaller canvas can add a delicate touch but in a larger room can look lost. Finding harmony in the overall feel in the design can be tricky especially if you have not decorated before.

Tips and ideas

Real life Mock ups
1. Try and assemble /organise your designed room with elements in your disposal, even if they are not the final items that you want to use. Putting these elements physically in place will give you a good sense of volumes of pieces and the functionality that will work for the room. You can use existing furniture or elements to set the framework ready for your final design ideas to be put in place.

Borrow artwork or make up a cardboard template
2. Artworks can be borrowed from another room. If you need smaller are larger artwork you can quickly guage the size by simply using a flattened cardboard box cut into various sizes (eg 60cm x 90cm or 80cm x120cm ) matching the designer sizes listed, they can be stuck to the wall temporarily with painter/masking tape in position and easily moved or re-positioned.

Use multiple canvases to create larger artworks.
3. For larger areas – canvases can be placed in pairs/triplets to create larger works. You may even opt for 2 medium sized canvases to give the right stretch or enlarge your art area rather than a single large oversize canvas. In our collections we try and give you matched artwork that you can put together as an ensemble. This includes multiple dimensions and portrait, landscape and square formats.

Computer Mockups made easy.
4. If you are at the point where the room is well underway and you need to visualize the artwork, take a photo of the room with either a cardboard template in place or some masking tape showing the canvas corners of your desired artwork. This way you can do some accurate mock ups on the computer with artworks that you like without the need to calculate scale. Just copy and paste your art on the photo and increase the size of the art to match the cardboard template in your room photo. You can even just use 2 small pieces of coloured painters tape / electrical tape set for example 61cm apart that way you can scale up your artwork to real world dimensions.

How high to hang Artwork

Generally most designers feel that eye level for mid to upper part of the canvas is a good rule of thumb. The objective being to allow the viewer to enjoy the image at a longer distance and take in some details as they approach. Obviously there would be variations on this idea to suit different design objectives, maybe the art is offsetting furniture to create balance or is hung lower to create a cosy seating nook as shown below.

Your artworks position can be adjusted even after your design is realised.
Both framed canvases and stretched canvases are fairly light in weight (no glass) so they are easy to hang and move, needing only one well set nail or screw. So if you change your mind moving the canvas is one of the least problematic things in adjusting your room design.

Simplify repairs
If you have just had your room painted keep a very small tin or glass jar (a cleaned 50g hotel jam jar is perfect) in the drawer. Fill the jar to the top with the leftover paint minimising air, it is easily accessible and lets you to make small repairs and touch ups for nail/screw holes if needed. Keeping the original leftover paint tin in the garage is good for referencing the paint number/code but with time air will start to harden the paint, and the larger tin is harder to keep airtight.

Budget Tips

Best value for Money
Stretched canvases provide the best value for money and can give great results creating 2 and 3 piece ensembles that give the illusion of a larger art work.

Watch shipping rates
Shipping is a cost to watch as it is charged on a per unit rate.
Framed canvases cost more as well because of added weight and size.
The largest canvases are disproportionately more shipping cost than standard sizes and because they are difficult for transporters due to their bulk and risk.

Standard Pricing
Our pricing is based on canvas size/type/finish so whichever artwork you prefer on your custom printed canvas it is the same price. Once you have decided on your size and finish the price is the same for artworks of the same size and finish. If you find a framed canvas artwork and prefer a non framed stretch version we can even build a stretched canvas product on request at no extra cost, matched to our stretched canvas pricing (less expensive than framed works). We do our best to keep prices aligned so our clients can maintain their budgets based on size and finish rather than individual art designs.

Which is better Framed Canvases or Stretched Canvas (no frame)

Both framed and stretched canvases are created with the same canvas quality and print quality. The main thing we have noticed is that formal elegance of the floating frame makes a good impression for clients looking for a high end refined look. Our stretched canvases are very popular with designers looking to create more casual mix and match compositions into larger works that get much more visual volume without visual interference of a frame.

Creating a Cohesive Look – Framed Canvases
Although more expensive framed canvases can help give a high end allure to your space. We currently have frames in black, dark brown and white. Black is excellent in setting a very formal feel for the space. White frames offer a little more detail and tend to be matched with lighter coloured designs on light walls. Brown frames are well matched to many abstract or earth coloured artworks where a sense of age/heritage is sought.

Visual freedom without the restriction – Stretched Canvases
Some of our designers feel that the stretched canvas offers a understated charm that the formality of framed canvases misses. They describe it as an freshness, new production almost out of the hands of the creator and hung onto the wall, without the added conception of where it is going more focused on what it is. Some of our clients actually prefer to take charge of framing the stretched canvas giving them greater control on the way the artwork ties in with their design. By doing this they can fine tune the frame size, profile and finish – giving them more control to make unique pieces and variants. Sometimes this is a great solution as the money saved on canvas cost can be upcycled into investing in a local frame specialist that has more options and can give you a personalised finished frame.
